I’m Back

October 29th, 2009

It’s been sometime since I update the blog! The last few months have been exciting for our family and the church:

1. The City Church were launched officially on 30 August and we saw 227 people turned up for service.

2. I was asked to be one of the team of 3 for Youth More Than Gold, a national initiative to serve our country and host the nations during the Youth Olympic Games in August 2010. We did a video promo for that which can be found on www.ymtg.sg.

3. We started a series on Proverbs at The City and the reviews have been encouraging!

4. I got to be a part of the Planetshakers Network meeting in Melbourne and that was amazing. I’m inspired just listening to what these movers and shakers are doing in their own nations.

5. We’re also in the midst of planning for Christmas and 2010. The City will be distributing 100 gift bags with daily necessities to 100 families in December.

6. At the home front, Megan is really growing up and she’s super cute. Her siblings loved her much. Joy and I have been enjoying family life a lot more!

Make sure you check out www.thecity.sg for our messages and sign up for the mailing list.

More Reflections from Catalyst West

April 26th, 2009

Had wings at Wingnuts last night at Newport Beach. They were really good. Slept for 4 hours and woke up early to catch my flight to Birmingham. Met up with my friend and mentor Pat Schatzline over dinner at Logan’s Roadhouse. Man, I am definitely overeating in the US.

Anyway I heard so much stuff at Catalyst West Coast that will take me a long time to apply them! It’s definitely worth the time and money.

Wide Awake

1. There has never been one ordinary child born on this planet and yet why is it that so many of us end up living ordinary lives?

2. There are a lot of people who are pursuing dreams that don’t fit their lives. There are a lot of people who are NOT pursuing dreams that fit their lives.

3.All of us have dreams inside of us that will never come to fruition unless we come together in community.

I was Taught and I Thought

4. What believe determines what we do.

5. I was taught the church should be a safe place, but I’m learning the church should be dangerous again. We’ve been inviting people to a very safe God. yet we are called by God to preach a very dangerous message.

6. Practical Athiests = People who believe in God, but act like he doesn’t exist.

7. I was taught was to build my church, but I’ve learned my highest calling is to build His Kingdom.

8. I was taught that success is only found in the big numbers, but I’m learning that the scorecard is changing. “There are 4 billion people who need Christ. How can we claim to be a megachurch? We are a small church with a megavision.”

9 Three Lines:

  • Line 1 = I believe in the Gospel enough to benefit from it.
  • Line 2 = I believe in the Gospel enough to contribute comfortably.
  • Line 3 = I believe in the Gospel enough to give my life to it.

10. If you stay the same, maybe you don’t really know Him.

Ezekiel 37 Leadership

11. The size of the vision God will give me is directly related to the amount of pain and discomfort I’m willing to endure.

12. The reason we experience pain is to understand his provision.

13. If you’ve been called to ministry, God’s hand is on you.

14. Dryness will always lead to desperation.

15. God needs us to feel what He feels, so we can do what He needs us to do.

16. Leaders don’t have a hard time teaching on the sovereignty of God. They have a hard time believing it.

17. There are people who are obsessed with discovery rather than development.

18. You feel stuck because you’re not ready for the next level.

19. Leadership is as easy as listening to God. Moses didn’t have a 40-year strategic plan. God led Moses one step at a time.

20. What would you be willing to attempt for God if you knew you couldn’t fail? Only when we surrender do we experience the supernatural.

Reflections from Catalyst West

April 24th, 2009

Sat through 4 hours of intense teachings at Catalyst West in Mariners Church. I learned at least 20 things about Uncertainty, Leadership, Innovation and Faith yesterday.

Leading in times of Uncertainty

1. Uncertainty is why we need leaders.

2. Uncertainty is NOT and indication of poor leadership.

3. We see in history that uncertainty is the arena which good leadership is identified.

4. I will always be uncertain and I am certain of that!

5. Uncertainly always causes us to be unclear. In times of uncertainty, retreat to our original vision and be clear.

6. Do not confuse plans and vision. In times of uncertainty plans change a lot. We must be flexibility and make adjustments.

Art of Innovation

7. Make meaning not money – compelling force to change the world.

8. Make Mantra – mission statement does not stick. Mantra is at most 3 words.

9. Jump to the Next Curve – change with the seasons.

10. Roll the DICEE – whatever we design must be Deep, Intelligent, Complete, Elegant and Emotive.

11. Don’t Worry Be Crappy – we ship and then we test.

12. Polarize People – try to create something for everyone and you will have mediocrity.

13. Let 100 Flowers Blossom – you will not know until you try it.

14. Churn Baby Churn – evolve your products.

15. Niche Thyself – be unique and valuable.

16. Follow 10, 20, 30 Rule -when presenting, keep your presentation to 10 slides, 20 minutes and use 30-point font.

17. Don’t let the Bozos Grind You Down – do not listen to people with stuff that ends with ‘i’.

Foundations of Faith in our Lives

18. What you applaud you encourage but beware of what you celebrate.

19. The essential foundations in our lives are Eternity, Morality, Accountability and Charity.

20. The testimony of a believer who survived a terrorist attack in Mumbai – ‘I was covered in another person’s blood taken for dead and left alone’. That’s the gospel in essence!

It’s Sizzling Up at The City!

April 21st, 2009

I’m waiting for a connecting flight at LAX so thought I’ll just write a few thoughts!

It’s really sizzling up at The City. The momentum is building…

  • God led us to a great facility just 5 minutes from Potong Pasir MRT Station. It’s on the 9th floor with an amazing view of the estate.
  • New friendships are being formed and existing ones are strengthened. We need to like one another if we want to be in the same ship heading to the same destination.
  • Our prayer meetings had been very good and insightful.
  • We have created ‘The City Facebook Group’ and the numbers are growing in our FB community.
  • Word is getting out about The City. The Website should go live on 1 May. Facebook Ads will be up in May.
  • We are giving those who might be interested in checking us out ‘An Inside Look at The City’ on 23 May. Expect to be spoilt with good food and loads of takeaways!

It’s all about living for Jesus and working with Jesus to transform lives, families and our city at The City!
